Taking Back Your Power

Christina Monai • Jan 18, 2021

Working with Jessica of True to You Lifestyle really resonated with me. I have lived through an almost lifelong battle with loving myself and who I am, and I can tell you from experience that it is a long and hard path to walk. You struggle daily with accepting your body and yourself, and that leads to some damaging self-talk that can bring you pretty low.

In preparing for this shoot, I had the honour of hearing Jessica’s own story of self-acceptance that led to her wanting to help other women through their own journey through to the other side. Seeing women learn to love their bodies and themselves really lights Jessica’s fire, and her core purpose is to walk beside her clients as they walk their own path of self-acceptance!

Lisa, owner of The Laser Room of Sherwood Park , changed careers and became an entrepreneur just a few years ago! She started with a cozy, one-room space within a local Sherwood Park salon and her business just took off! I had the privilege of filming in both her original space AND in her new space, which is bigger, brighter, and gives her way more flexibility to add even more services and equipment to her already impressive arsenal of skin care treatments. Not only is she an incredible businesswoman and brilliant laser aesthetician, Lisa is also very passionate about building her local community of Sherwood Park and supporting other local businesses to help them succeed. Can’t wait to collaborate with this incredible lady again!

Nothing is better than when two kickass businesswomen come together to collaborate! I first met Janna back in 2019 at a local event for women entrepreneurs in Edmonton. I had just started my business and was looking to connect and get inspiration from other women already rocking their businesses. We serendipitously happened to be seated at the same table and immediately hit it off. Janna has an energy about her that just shines through, and we stayed connected over the next year until this past summer when the opportunity to collaborate came up and we took it! Janna was previously a teacher, and the drive to help people didn’t stop when she started her own Rodan and Fields consultant work. She sees how much the products help her clients, of all ages and walks of life, and it’s this drive that motivates her every single day. She thrives on building connections and community with her clients and her team. She has grown her business into an empire, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this unbelievably amazing woman!

This whole blog thing is totally new to me… which I guess is pretty obvious considering my last post was back in September. Lesson #1 of blogging – you should really blog more than once every couple of months.I’m not surprised that my blog has slipped my mind. Since I first struck out on my own in September, being my own boss has brought a sometime overwhelming truckload of to-do lists, meetings, Facebook groups, disappearing down the social media rabbit-hole… oh yeah, and actually getting doing some filming and editing to pay the bills. It’s been a steep learning curve to carve out time for all these things that demand my attention. And sometimes that means I don’t attend that networking meeting or maybe that video doesn’t get posted to Instagram right away. Being prone to perfectionist tendencies, this has been a major challenge for me. But it’s becoming a necessary skill for me to hone. I’m learning to give myself permission to not have everything done by the time I need to go pick up my kiddos from daycare. Otherwise, I would go absolutely bonkers insane and miss out on key time with my family. Part of my desire for this blog is to show my work to all of you beautiful people and blow your socks off with some amazing love stories and showcase some kick-ass awesome local businesses! My main purpose for this blog, however, is to be real and genuine with you. I want to pull back the curtain and show you the amount of work and effort that actually goes into filming and shooting a wedding, a business promo, or a birth. My job isn’t just setting up a camera and that’s it. It’s so much more than that… which will be in a future blog post 😉
